Lecture 270:- Databases - An Introduction
A database is a structured collection of data that is stored and organized in a way that enables efficient retrieval and manipulation of the data. Databases are used in many different applications, from small-scale personal applications to large-scale enterprise systems.
Databases can be broadly classified into two types:
- Relational databases: These databases store data in tables consisting of rows and columns, with each row representing a record or instance of the entity being modeled, and each column representing an attribute or property of the entity. The relationships between the tables are defined through the use of foreign keys.
- NoSQL databases: These databases do not use the traditional tabular structure of relational databases. Instead, they use other structures such as key-value pairs, documents, or graphs to store data. NoSQL databases are generally more flexible and scalable than relational databases and are often used in applications that require high availability and scalability.
Databases are typically managed by a Database Management System (DBMS), which is responsible for organizing, storing, retrieving, and securing the data. Examples of popular DBMSs include MySQL, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, and MongoDB.
