A server is a computer program or device that provides a service to other programs or devices, known as clients. The client-server model is a way of designing and implementing distributed computing systems that separates the client from the server, allowing them to operate independently while still communicating with each other.
In the context of web development, a server typically refers to a computer program that listens for incoming requests over the internet and sends back responses. When a user types a URL or clicks on a link in a web page, a request is sent to the server asking for a particular resource such as an HTML page, an image, or a video. The server then processes the request and sends back the appropriate response.
There are several types of servers, including web servers, file servers, email servers, and database servers. Web servers are perhaps the most common type and are used to serve up websites and web applications.
